the knob, the nap, the reset

Sometimes, even when you’re almost three, you get so tired that you can’t pull it together. (insert sarcastic tone here:) Life is rough; Your diaper feels a little wetter than it should be. You’ve spent an hour on a Saturday in the grocery store. Lunch is later than usual. The earth must be slightly off its axis.

Usually, I can snap her out of her ‘state’ with some kind of distraction. She’s a good kid ~ certainly not a candidate for the Super Nanny. And to be fair, she does have a cold and I’m sure she’s not feeling 100%. But when a Hot & Ready Pizza picnic & Playhouse Disney’s Strawberry Shortcake can’t put a dent in the mood, it’s time to push the reset button. And that means – naptime.

I pop her into bed, appeasing her objection with a few books, a doll and her favorite “bunkie”. As I leave the room and close the door behind me, a certain sense of relief washes over me. I’m free!!! Readers, I’ve gotta think you’ve felt the same way?

But have you ever gone back in? When all is quiet and still? Would you risk turning the knob, risk disrupting the nap, risk the “reset”? Today I did. I risked the turn of the knob…. the creak in the floor… the “click” of the camera… and I fell in love for the gazillionth time. (And she stayed sleeping.)
